Literacy Point of Light: Brianna Tillman, Young Professionals Group

Called to action by the need to help others, Brianna Tillman has been a member of our Young Professionals Group (YPG) for the past three years, and currently serves as co-chair of service projects on its executive leadership team.

Believing in the Foundation’s cause of improving lives through the power of literacy, Brianna wanted to share her love for literature with the Houston community in hopes of helping others in the same way it has helped her.

“Literacy has impacted me by saving me emotionally. Whenever I go through tough moments in my life, I can go read a book and escape. It has been my safe place for years. It helped me cope with depression and got me through some of the toughest moments in my life.”

A volunteer experience that sticks out to Brianna is the recent Lantrip Book Nook Project. Brianna highlighted how dedicated the YPG team is, explaining that this event had the unfortunate hurdle of no air conditioning inside the school building, reaching almost 100 degrees. Regardless, the team powered through and got all the book nooks assembled. A proud moment for everyone involved.

Along with the book nook project, Brianna loves interacting with the children and seeing their faces light up after receiving new books. Brianna also recently organized a volunteer event for members of the YPG in partnership with her employer, Texas Children's Hospital, during which YPG volunteers gave books to families who participated in a car seat safety training event hosted by the hospital.

When asked about her work as an administrative assistant at Texas Children’s Hospital, Brianna responded, “There’s nothing like seeing children Happy and I am glad we make that happen daily.”

We are grateful for Brianna’s commitment and proud to feature her as a Literacy Point of Light.
