Join the Literacy Movement: 5 Reasons to Join an Auxiliary Group
In a world where time, arguably humanity's greatest commodity, is divided among social platforms, daily routines, and managing a work-life balance, the capacity to engage in volunteerism often feels constrained. We understand that daily routines take top priority, but if you've ever felt that you could be doing more, especially in Houston where numerous organizations vie for your attention, we invite you to consider the impactful opportunities offered by our Young Professionals Group and Ladies for Literacy Guild.
Here are the top five reasons why joining the literacy movement as a member can transform you into a difference-maker in the Houston community:
1. Network with other Like-Minded Literacy Lovers
Both of our auxiliary groups are comprised of individuals who believe that education and literacy are important causes to support, and many are readers themselves. As a member, you can engage in networking events throughout the year, such as the First Lady’s Book Club and Membership Mondays, where you can connect with like-minded individuals.
2. Inspire the Next Generation of Leaders by Reading to Children
As a member, you will have opportunities to become a volunteer reading mentor at select elementary schools. These events, which entail reading to a classroom of children, are among our most popular as members, as they connect with children through the joy of reading.
3. Help Place Books in the Hands of Underserved Children
Whether through the Foundation’s My Home Library, the Ladies for Literacy Guild’s Curiosity Cruiser mobile library initiative of the YPG’s Barbara’s Book Box program, you will have opportunities to help distribute books to children in need.
4. Serve as a Leader in our Community
As a member, you will be afforded the chance to serve in a leadership capacity, whether as an officer or a chair of a committee in the YPG or Ladies for Literacy Guild. This experience will allow you to step up in an even greater way in advancing our mission, giving back to the community, and gaining meaningful experience, both professionally and personally.
5. Have Fun While Making a Difference
Whether building libraries in community-based nonprofit organizations or attending social events and signature fundraisers, such as the Power of Literacy Luncheon or Storybook Gala, you can have fun while feeling good that you are doing good.
Join us in building literacy networks and creating a generational impact in our communities. Your involvement can make a lasting difference in the lives of individuals and contribute to the collective growth of Houston.
