Literacy Point of Light: Maureen Higdon, Ladies for Literacy Guild

Meet Maureen Higdon, a dedicated member of the Ladies for Literacy Guild, whose Guild journey began about six years ago after being inspired by friends and Guild members like Betty Hrncir, Lilly Andress, and Ginger Blanton. Their unwavering commitment and the positive word-of-mouth within the Guild community captured Higdon's attention, along with a deep admiration for the late Barbara Bush and her tireless dedication to literacy.

Over the years, Maureen has actively participated in various Guild activities and events. From inspirational membership gatherings to engaging book club meetings and impactful Power of Literacy Luncheons, Higdon has found joy and inspiration in the collective efforts to promote literacy. One highlight that stands out is the heartwarming experience of providing books to children for their home libraries, witnessing firsthand the difference the Guild makes in the lives of young readers.

Among Maureen's most humbling experiences is witnessing the impact of the Curiosity Cruiser at Guild events. The project's idea and its execution, culminating in the deployment of four cruisers, showcase the power of collaboration and the Guild's ability to bring literature directly to children in the community. Maureen is inspired by the ongoing partnerships that make such initiatives possible.

Looking ahead, Maureen eagerly anticipates joining the Reading Roundup programs in schools, recognizing this as a crucial area where the Guild's impact on literacy truly shines. Reflecting on past experiences volunteering to read to children, Higdon underscores the importance of literacy in shaping one's future, understanding that the ability to read, comprehend, and communicate opens doors to a world of opportunities.

A lover of spy novels and historical fiction, Maureen shares a passion for reading that extends to authors like Daniel Silva, Tom Clancy, and Ron Chernow. Currently immersed in heavy yet enlightening reads like "Democracy in America," "Laurence of Arabia," and "Damascus Station," she embraces the power of literature even in challenging times.

With a rich background in both the corporate world, with 28 years at Chubb Group of Insurance Companies, and a robust history of volunteer service, including leadership roles in the Houston Symphony League and Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, Maureen brings a wealth of experience to the Ladies for Literacy Guild.

"This is a wonderful meaningful organization doing very good things for our community. This is the type of organization I am happy to give my time to," said Higdon.

Thank you, Maureen Higdon, for being a valued Literacy Point of Light!
